Mamallapuram or Mahabalipuram is a historical port city of Tamil Nadu known for its unique and fascinating architectural style dating back to 7th century. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was an important sea port located on the Bay of Bengal and was known for its art, architecture and culture.

Some of the important attractions at Mamallapuram are the Trimurti Cave temple dedicated to the supreme Indian Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva), Sri Krishna butterball, Tiger Cave, Panch Ratha, Varaha Cave Temple and the Shore Temple.  Most of these structures are made by cutting single rocks. There is also a Light House dating back to 1894.

The Tamil Nadu Government hosts the famous Mahabalipuram Dance Festival during the winter months of December and January, every year. During this festival, one can enjoy various classical dance forms of India performed against the backdrop of Pallava rock sculptures.
The best time to visit Mamallapuram is during the winter months of November to February, when the weather is cool and comfortable for sightseeing.
