Brief Overview of Kalinjar Fort

Kalinjar is a fortress city in Banda district of Uttar Pradesh. It was ruled by several dynasties, from Chandelas, Guptas, Solankis, Vardhana dynasty, Marathas to Mughals. Kalinjar Fort is located about 100 km from Khajuraho and it is an ancient fort that is more than a thousand years old. It was built by the Chandela rulers and served as a place of deep spiritual importance along with a strong defense post. The name “Kalinjar” comes from two Sanskrit words, Kaal meaning time or death and Jayar meaning conqueror, together meaning “the one who conquered death.” According to legends, Lord Shiva defeated death after drinking poison during the churning of the ocean which makes this fort a sacred site. Built on a high plateau about 1,200 feet above sea level, this fort offers sweeping views of the land below. With its grand gateways, rock-cut temples and ancient sculptures, Kalingar Fort beautifully tells the story of the royal past of India.
