This road trip begins at Phuentsholing which is the gateway to Bhutan from India. After completing all the entry formalities, explore this peaceful border town. Here, you can visit Zangto Pelri Lhakhang which is a beautiful Buddhist temple, wander through local markets and enjoy Bhutanese food. Stay overnight there and get ready for the exciting road trip ahead.
Wakeup and start the drive to Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan. This road journey will take you through winding mountain roads, rivers, green forests and charming valleys. Stop at scenic viewpoints to enjoy the fresh air and click some pictures. On arrival, check into the hotel and relax or explore the local markets.
Spend the day exploring the key attractions of Thimphu. You will visit Buddha Dordenma Statue, Memorial Chorten and Tashichho Dzong. Along with this, you can explore the Folk Heritage Museum to learn about the culture and traditions of Bhutan. In the evening, stroll through the local markets where you can buy handmade crafts, souvenirs and traditional Bhutanese products.
Today, drive to the beautiful valley of Punakha. On the way, stop at Dochula Pass which is one of the most famous viewpoints of Bhutan. If the weather is clear, you can enjoy amazing views of the Himalayan mountains and see 108 memorial chortens. After reaching Punakha, visit the stunning Punakha Dzong and the peaceful Chimi Lhakhang which is also known as the “Temple of Fertility.”
After breakfast, continue your journey to Paro. It is a beautiful town surrounded by mountains and green landscapes. Once you arrive, visit the historic Paro Dzong and the National Museum where you can learn about the culture and history of Bhutan. Today is one of the most exciting days of your Bhutan road trip itinerary. Hike to the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery which is one of the most iconic landmarks of Bhutan. This monastery is built on a cliff overlooking the Paro Valley. It offers breathtaking views and a quiet environment. This hike takes a few hours but the beautiful scenery along the journey makes every step worthwhile.
Spend another day enjoying the beauty of Paro. Visit Kyichu Lhakhang which is one of the oldest temples of Bhutan or explore more of the town at your own pace. You can relax at a local cafe, shop for traditional handicrafts or taste popular Bhutanese dishes such as Ema Datshi. This extra day gives you time to enjoy Paro without feeling rushed.
Enjoy your breakfast and then drive back to Phuentsholing. Enjoy the scenic mountain roads one last time and stop at viewpoints if you wish. Once you reach the border town, you can complete your return journey to India.
